"Don't Dream It's Over" proved to be a massive worldwide hit, reaching #2 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The music video for the song earned the band the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1987. After the band's demise in 1996, the song re-entered the UK charts and climbed to #25, two positions higher than the previous UK peak of #27 from 1986.

The song has been covered by numerous artists, including Classified in 2003, Paul Young in 1991, Sixpence None the Richer in 2002 and Howie Day in 2005; italian singer Antonello Venditti provided his own translated version of the song, 'Alta Marea', which became a massive hit in italian charts. Also, Sarah Blasko covered the song for the tribute album ''She Will Have Her Way'' (2005). Spanish singer Pedro Javier Hermosilla also made his own transaltion, 'Un Agujero En El Alma', and released it as the first single of his third album 'Tres Y...'. which was recorded live.
