Background

George O'Malley was born to Louise and Harold O'Malley, and was raised in or around Seattle, Washington. The O'Malleys were a close-knit if not wealthy family (Harold was a truck driver and Louise is a teacher), and Harold spent significant quality time with George and his brothers, Ronny and Jerry, during their childhoods. While Ronny and Jerry shared their father's interest in turkey hunting and classic cars, George was less enthusiastic about his family's hobbies, and as an adult would show some embarrassment over them.
While his brothers found careers in dry cleaning and postal service, George attended medical school at Oregon Health and Science University. After graduation and in spite of borderline test scores and qualifications, George secured a position in the surgical internship program at Seattle Grace Hospital. He also has a master's degree in publicity and marketing from Yale University.

Overview

Often the most emotional of the male doctors, he sometimes gets into arguments with others despite his more positive personality. His sensitive and sometimes bumbling personality have earned him a plethora of nicknames from the other interns – primarily Cristina Yang – including "Bambi" and "Fetus."
He has a markedly different personality from those of his brothers, one of whom accidentally shot his father in the buttocks on a Thanksgiving hunting trip. Despite his sometimes strained relationship with his family, George stepped up during his father's illness and showed his dedication to his brothers and mother.
Despite his disastrous "tragic sex" with Meredith and other numerous conflicts with all, George maintains that his three closest friends are Cristina, Meredith, and Izzie. He states that "they're my family", especially his best friend Izzie.

Character history

Dr. George O'Malley was one of Meredith Grey's roommates. He had an infatuation with Meredith from his first meeting with her, and ended up having a one-night stand with her after he told her that he loved her. She cried during their encounter.
During the beginning of his internship, he was picked by Dr. Preston Xavier Burke to perform the first surgery of all the interns. During the surgery, he choked and earned the nickname "007" (after James Bond's License to Kill). In the next season , George and Alex Karev get stuck in an elevator with a patient who has been shot. The patient begins to bleed out and when Alex freezes up, Burke has to talk George through surgery and George "flies solo" for the first time.
George starts to date a nurse named Olivia in Season 1, from whom he eventually contracts syphilis, but later learned that she had gotten it from Alex who Olivia was seeing before she started to date George. George later dates Dr. Callie Torres, an orthopedic surgeon at Seattle Grace, but his poor treatment of her in Season 3 causes her to pull away. Later, she tries to fight for him.
During a camping trip, he not only learned from Alex that Callie had slept with Dr. Mark Sloan, but witnessed one of Burke's hand tremors. He confronted Cristina with his suspicions about Burke's problems after his father was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and a leaking aortic valve that would require surgery.
Concerned about Burke's current abilities as a surgeon, he contacted Dr. Erica Hahn to perform his father's valve replacement. His relationship with Callie was strained when he confronted her about her fling with Sloan, but as his father's condition deteriorated, George slowly allowed Callie to re-enter his life. George suffered a devastating loss when the difficult decision was made to take his father off life support after complications from cancer surgery left him in multi-system organ failure.
In an attempt to overcome the grief he experienced from his father's death, he secluded himself with his girlfriend and pursued an entirely sexual relationship. She begins to avoid him because she does not want to have that much sex, but he says that he would be happy to live with her and that he loves her. He asks her to marry him and they eloped to Las Vegas. Eight days have passed George and Callie enter, and George announces that he has married Callie in Las Vegas. This prompts Alex to laugh "Dude, she's Callie O'Malley". Izzie Stevens mocks Callie (and indirectly George) about the small size of her diamond ring.
Callie continually insists that George favors his friends (Izzie in particular) over her, and recently has had a serious fight where Callie told George that she feels that Izzie has feelings for him, and ultimately kicked him out of their hotel room. George then went to Izzie, confessing that he feels he may have made a mistake in marrying Callie, and that he wants to vent with alcohol. George ends up having sex with Izzie, and though he initially forgets this in the hangover haze, he later remembers and insists to Izzie that it remain their secret, and goes home with Callie, crushed by guilt. Currently George is torn over what to do about both Izzie and Callie, for he has confided in Dr. Burke that he is "in love with two women." George has recently put in for a transfer to nearby hospital Mercy-West, thinking the only way to resolve his feelings for Izzie is to be away from her. After realizing how conflicted George is, and not wanting to lose her best friend, Izzie lies to George and says that sleeping with him meant nothing and that she doesn't have feelings for him. In the finale of the show's third season, Izzie admitted to being in love with George, who in turn, reacted strangely. It was revealed that George failed his intern exams and has decided to leave the hospital. When Miranda Bailey asks George if she had failed him, he replies: "No... I failed you".

Future

While his character appeared to be leaving Seattle Grace in the season three finale, T.R. Knight is expected to return in the fourth season, considering his recent contract negotiations. [1] and statements made by E! Online columnist Kristin Veitch. In addition, an unconfirmed source has stated
"A lot of character story lines were left in question. It's a cliffhanger finale...T.R's character looks like he could be going. ... It doesn't necessarily mean anything."[2]
