DUBLIN NORTH WEST (DáIL ÉIREANN CONSTITUENCY)

(Redirected from Dublin North West)

'Dublin North West' is a constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas. It was created for the 1937 general election when the old Dublin North constituency divided into Dublin North West and Dublin North East. The constituency was briefly abolished in 1977, under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1974 [1], with most of the constituency going to the new constituency of Dublin Finglas with a smaller but significant portion going to a new Dublin Cabra constituency. Dublin North West was then re-created in 1981.

Details

It is located in the north-western area of County Dublin. The constituency has an electorate of 47,641 and at present is served by 3 Teachtaí Dála (TDs), although in the elections from 1981 to 1997 it had 4 TDs. The method of election is the Single Transferable Vote.
The constituency is overwhelmingly urbanised and encompasses the Finglas and Ballymun electoral areas of Dublin City Council in their entirety together with the Santry area of Fingal County Council and the area of Whitehall to the west of Swords Road. The constituency gained some extra territory at the 2007 general election. Parts of the Dublin North Central constituency were moved to this constituency and the Dunsink and Scribblestown areas were moved out of the Dublin West constituency.
