A 'duck pond' is a pond for ducks and other water birds. Often such ponds are artificial and ornamental in nature, in public parks for example. Sometimes they may be less ornamental, in a farmyard for example.
Some duck ponds are purposefully built for the shooting of duck. These flight ponds are constructed by hunters and wildfowlers to attract ducks, such as mallard, teal and widgeon at dawn and at dusk. The ponds have shallow edges to allow ducks to reach food on the bottom. Barley is often used to attract or hold the ducks. This form of shooting can be great sport even though sessions do not last very long. A hide is used to conceal the shooter.
Typically, such ponds are round in shape. An example is the lily pond in the University Parks at Oxford in England, constructed in 1925.
