DUKE SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN

'Duke School for Children' is a nonprofit independent K-8 school in Durham, North Carolina.
Duke School opened in 1947 as an innovative, project-based elementary lab school supported by Duke University's psychology department, which wanted to test their research on how children learn best. The school has been separate from the University since 1983, but a strong academic influence is still evident in the school's research-driven teaching practices and curriculum. Faculty at the school also routinely present papers at national professional conferences and contemporary leaders in education theory visit the school to work with its staff. The school describes its approach as a "project-based, child-centered, hands-on model." The school's mission is "to help children become confident, independent learners who solve real-life problems, work cooperatively with others, and develop their personal talents, characters and ambitions." In the fall of 2008, the school will move its lower campus, currently still located on University grounds, into several new buildings and additional land on its middle school campus at 3716 Old Erwin Rd, Durham NC, 27705.
