Biography
Born in Carlisle, Rippon grew up in various parts of the UK and the Middle East. Studied medicine at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge where he met Emma Townshend, daughter of The Who guitarist Pete Townshend. Moved to London and produced Townshend's debut album ''Winterland''[1] for East West Records (1998). Recorded six EPs released in 1998/1999 on his own label ''Diablo Fuel''. Good reviews and support of Xfm led to management deal with Paul McGuinness and a publishing deal with Blue Mountain Music[2].
Rippon recorded three albums over the next two years, ''Burning Up, Burning Out'' (2000),'' All That Spanish Dust'' (2001) and ''Tigershark'' (2002) all released in limited numbers on his own imprint.
March 2003 saw the release of the single ''Rocks And Sands'' (Northern Sky)[3], a song written from the point of view of a suicide bomber. Rippon acknowledged the imagery of the 17 November 1997 Luxor massacre, when attackers killed tourists as they took their holiday snaps, but said the song was really about Marshall McLuhan. The song was written well before 9/11 but release in early 2003 led to misinterpretation on the web, The Guardian reviewing it as a protest song against the War in Iraq[4]. Two years later ''Rocks and Sands'' was used in an AOL commercial, the company apparently oblivious to the subject matter.
In the summer of 2003 Rippon met Nigel Hoyle, (Gay Dad), recruited Crispin Hunt (The Longpigs) and formed Gramercy[2][5]. In 2005 they released an EP, ''Hold On'' (Redemption)[6], signed to Sony BMG only to disband after a single live performance at the Glastonbury Festival[3][7].
Rippon also has a music production company, ''Brothergunn''[4][8], through which he has written music for short films such as ''Blistering Days''(2002) and several commercials.
