EAST TSIM SHA TSUI STATION
'East Tsim Sha Tsui Station' (尖東站) is the second newest station (behind Lok Ma Chau), and the southern terminus on Hong Kong's . It opened on 24 October 2004, symbolising the comeback of the Rail to Tsim Sha Tsui after 30 years. The project was known as "East Rail Tsim Sha Tsui Extension". The line was extended from Hung Hom, the previous terminus, to Signal Hill, where the new station is located, through a tunnel beneath Salisbury Road.
The station was built to alleviate traffic jam and the high passenger flow at Kowloon Tong Station. The distance from Hung Hom to the station is about one kilometre with the journey time of less than two minutes. However, the fares are unusually high (e.g., from Sha Tin, the fare to Hung Hom is only HK$5.10 (US$0.65), but the fare to the East Tsim Sha Tsui station is HK$7.60 (US$0.97)). The fact that the fares are unusually has become the main cause of complaints amongst passengers.
Passengers had also complained about inadequate signage on the station's trial run day. In response, KCRC has added more signs inside the station and divided the station into 'red', 'green' and 'yellow' zones. Welcome signs in Simplified Chinese, French, Japanese and Korean were also added, in addition to English and Traditional Chinese. (KCRC is also considering adding more signs in Simplified Chinese at all stations for the convenience of tourists from Mainland China.)
Apart from the high fare, the considerable distance between the station and the MTR Tsim Sha Tsui station makes interchanging with the MTR no easier than changing trains at Kowloon Tong. Nevertheless, a steady amount of passengers do change trains at East Tsim Sha Tsui, since changing at Kowloon Tong may involve an extra interchange within the MTR system.
It should be noted that the current status of East Tsim Sha Tsui Station as a terminus station is only temporary. When the is extended through the Kowloon Southern Link, the terminus of East Rail will be relocated back to Hung Hom, with East Tsim Sha Tsui becoming an intermediate station on the West Rail.
Due to inadequacy of space on display screens, the full name "East Tsim Sha Tsui" is not shown on platform information displays nor on trains heading to the station. Instead, the abbreviations, "E. TST" and "E. Tsimshatsui", are used respectively.
