ECGBERT, ARCHBISHOP OF YORK

The obverse of a sceat of Ecgberht. The reverse names his brother King Eadberht of Northumbria. Similar coins are known from the reigns of Kings Æthelwald Moll and Alhred.

'Ecgbert' or 'Ecgberht' or 'Ecgbeorht' (died 766) was an eighth century Archbishop of York and correspondent of Bede and Saint Boniface.

Ecgbert was made bishop of York in 734Powicke ''Handbook of British Chronology'' p. 263 by his cousin and fellow-Leodwalding Ceolwulf of Northumbria, succeeding Wilfrid II on the latter's resignation. The pall was sent him in 735 and he became the first northern archbishop after Paulinus of York. He was the brother of Eadberht, who ruled Northumbria 737758.Ashely ''Mammoth Book of British Kings & Queens'' p. 289-290 He was the recipient of the famous letter of Bede, dealing with the evils arising from spurious monasteries. Ecgbert himself wrote a ''Dialogus Ecclesiasticae Instilutionis'', a ''Penitentiale'' and a ''Pontificale''. He was a correspondent of Saint Boniface, who asked him to support his censure of Ethelbald of Mercia.
Ecgbert died on November 19, 766.
