EDISON "PANTERA" MIRANDA
(Redirected from Edison Miranda)
'Edison Miranda' (January 7, 1981, Buenaventura, Colombia) is a professional boxer.
Although he has only been boxing eight years, Edison Miranda has been a fighter his entire life. He was abandoned by his family at one month old and spent the rest of his childhood working hard in the plantain and yucca fields of Tumaco on the southern coast of Colombia. By the age of nine, he was living completely on his own, with no parents, sweeping up for a street vendor in the neighboring town of Buenaventura and by the time Edison was 12, he was already working a grown-man's job in construction. Just two years later, he worked as a cattle butcher in Barranquilla, where he would soon start pursuing his dream of becoming a champion boxer.
He began his amateur career at the age of 16, winning 128 out of 132 fights and narrowly missing a berth on the 2000 Colombian Olympic team.Edison turned pro at age 20
152 fights later, Edison became a professional boxer, but his journey was only halfway over. March 2002 saw the promising young boxer's arrival in the Dominican Republic. Having been promised a shot at going to the United States to fight the top middleweight fighters in the world, Edison continued with what he's best at – fighting – both in and out of the ring. Struggling to make ends meet, left homeless and hungry by an unfair contract, Edison left the Dominican Republic and returned to Baranquilla, Colombia on December 24, 2004. With the support of friends, he fulfilled his dream of making it as a boxer in the United States when he signed with Warriors and then had his first American fight in Hollywood, Florida on May 20, 2005. "I am God's warrior," Edison says, "I've always put my trust in Him, and he's always protected me. God is the reason I'm here today… and he's the reason I fight. Because I know it's His plan that I be a champion."
He currently lives in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Miranda received his first major world title shot, when he fought Arthur Abraham for his IBF Middleweight title on September 23, 2006 in Wetzlar, Germany. The fight was not without controversy. After some bad feelings, when Miranda throw two punchs after the bell rang in the 2nd round, in the 5th round, in a clinch Miranda headbutted Abraham on the right side of his face.Abraham was seen turning away hurt with his mouth agap. the referee Randy Neumann stopped the fight and during 5 minute break, the doctor recommended to stop the fight to what he what he saw as a broken jaw from a legal punch. The referee decided to continue the fight. Abraham fought the reminder of the fight with a visibly broken jaw that was grossly swollen at the end of the fight. Miranda was unable to hit Abraham, head-butted him and hit him low, and was deducted five points, leading to his decision loss against Abraham.
On March 3, 2007 Miranda won a unanimous decision over Allan Green in San Juan, Puerto Rico, televised on HBO. Miranda dominated most of the fight and knocked Green down twice in the last round. Pantera was also knocked down himself. The fight was fought at 162 pounds limit, foreshadowing Miranda's problems at making weight.
On May 19th on HBO, Miranda, after losing nearly every round, was knocked out in seven rounds by Kelly Pavlik (31-0 28 KOs) in Memphis, TN on the Taylor vs Spinks undercard. After getting knocked down the first time, Miranda spit out his mouthpiece, leading to a one-point deduction. It didn't help him survive, since he was knocked down again. After Pavlik landed a barrage of punches, the fight was stopped.
Before the fight, Miranda had insulted Pavlik, calling the fight one "between a man and a boy." After the fight, he had little to say. Pavlik commented he believed Miranda was bragging to cover up his fear of him.
The fight was titled "Right to Fight" with the winner hopefully getting a shot at Taylor's belts.
Miranda suffered his first knockout defeat at the hands of Pavlik in which was an enthralling fight, which produced a first and second round which may widely be considered round of the year for 2007.
Edison's keys to success are discipline, faith and hard work . His training regimen includes only jogging, the stationary bike, jump rope, punching the bag and sparring. He doesn't lift weights, doesn't drink alcohol, and always goes to bed early. When asked about his greatest goal as a boxer he replies, "I want to be the kind of champion that helps others… to help children that were like me, homeless, with nowhere else to go. True champions are role models and that's what I strive to be."
