EMBASSY OF ARMENIA IN WASHINGTON

The 'Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Washington' is the Armenian embassy in Washington D.C. Soon after independence in 1991, Armenia set up a diplomatic mission in the United States, and a full-fledged embassy was established in February 1993 with the arrival of ambassador Rouben Shugarian. The current ambassador is Tatul Markarian.
The embassy is located at 2225 R Street, NW just off Embassy Row. The building was originally built in 1909 to house Congressman Gilbert M. Hitchcock. The structure was designed by architect George Oakley Totten. For several decades the building was the home of the International Institute of Interior Design. This organization merged with Marymount University in 1990 and Armenia bought the structure in 1995. The purchase of the structure and its later renovations were paid for in part by substantial donations from the Armenian-American community.
