EMERALD ISLE, NORTH CAROLINA
'Emerald Isle' is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Crystal Coast and is located entirely on the Bogue Banks. The population was 3,488 at the 2000 census, but as many as 50,000 visitors inhabit the area during the summer season, filling up vacant rental properties that do not count toward official census results.[1]
Construction on the island began in earnest in the 1960s and has accelerated since then. Today, much of the oceanfront is lined with homes that many would consider to be McMansion-sized. The rapid development of the island has resulted in a precarious economic and ecological situation, with many of those homes at risks due to poor management of natural resources.[1] Undeveloped land on the island is very scarce, and therefore, very expensive.
