ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL
The 'Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council' ('EPSRC') is a British Research Council that provides government funding for grants to undertake research and postgraduate degrees in engineering and the physical sciences (including mathematics, Artificial Intelligence and computer science), mainly to universities in the United Kingdom. The head office is in Swindon, Wiltshire.
It was created in 1994. It was formerly a part of the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC).
The EPSRC funds Doctoral Training Accounts (DTA) to allow postgraduate students to spend 3 years engaged in research activities which will lead to a PhD as well as the four year Engineering Doctorate.
Science and Innovation Minister, Malcolm Wicks announced the appointment of John Armitt as the new Chair of the EPSRC. He succeeded Dame Julia Higgins on 1 April 2007. The appointment is for four years.
