ENRIQUE WILSON
'Enrique Wilson Martes' (born July 27, 1973 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a former Major League Baseball infielder. He batted switch and threw right-handed.
In his eight-season career, Wilson has played with the Cleveland Indians (1997-2000), Pittsburgh Pirates (2000-2001), New York Yankees (2001-2004), and with the Chicago Cubs (2005).
Versatile and valuable anywhere he plays, Wilson has had a rather eventful career, mostly as a backup at second base, third and shortstop, playing hitters well, and has a strong arm. Wilson
has some pop in his bat, and he will run occasionally, but he is smart enough not to try to steal very often.
Wilson is a career .244 hitter with 22 home runs, with three grand slams, and 141 RBI in 555 games. He was signed by the Baltimore Orioles to a minor-league contract before the 2005 season.
Had the Yankees won Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, Wilson would have departed to the Dominican Republic on the deadly American Airlines Flight 587. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera says that he is happy that he blew the save in game 7 because that way he still has a friend (Wilson).
In 2003, Enrique Wilson was involved in an incident where Manny Ramirez missed a game claiming to have a sore throat, but was later found to actually have been partying in a hotel room with Wilson. At the time, Wilson played for the rival New York Yankees.
Wilson had surprisingly very good numbers off of pitcher Pedro Martinez, one of the better pitchers in the game.
In 2006, Wilson played for the Boston Red Sox's Triple A team the Pawtucket Red Sox and retired on August
