 | Stefan George: Algabal To the Algabal of the present ( my friend Dominic DeSando ) who reminded me of my duty towards the great German poet Stefan George I dedicate these lines. Far from being a translation, they are a poetic condensation of the first two poems of the volume that bears his name. They refer of course to the emperor also known to us as Heliogabalus. I bow to Olga Marx and to Ernst Morwitz (friend of the poet) whose translation I have consulted. Stefan George published his poetic sequence 'Algabal' in 1892. It was dedicated to the memory of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in these lines (my translation): Scorched by the vision of ever-glowing youth I felt so near you, yearned for your precious presence. Enshrined in these pages, Algabal, your brother, embraces you in death, dear martyred King! Algabal Across his ample chest that burns like gold, fruit of the splendid summer and the sun, ropes of glittering gems in silver casings cast their coruscations through his rooms and shine into his courtiers' faces. Underground, beneath these burnished floors, hoarded treasure, piled high in subterranean galleries, outshines the winter glories of the moon reflected from monstrosities of frost. And fear, which potent force alone has gathered these, freezes hall and corridor and cave. Algabal is ruler here: a boy. Wrought iron urns exude in wafting clouds scent of lemon, frankincense and musk. The music is from Richard Strauss's Salome and Richard Wagner's Lohengrin. |
