Essex county has had two large urban explosions in its history, one at the Essex Train Station in 1907 and one on Valentine's Day, 1980 at the hardware store in downtown.
On December 19, 2006, CBET-TV's 6 p.m. news displayed a news article that stated that many residents in the town were displeased with the name "Essex", as it is not only confusing with the county's name, but is also too town-centric (for the community of Essex) in the north, and does not equally represent the former townships of Colchester North, Colchester South, and the former town of Harrow. Mayor Ron McDermott even said he would consider renaming the town to something unique, since "most of the towns and locations in Essex County have very little local significance, since they were named after locations in England. I'd love to possibly name our town after a veteran of a war, much like we do for local streets."
