Miners' strike
Estevan was the site of a notorious coal miner's strike in 1931. Although most of the strikers were from nearby Bienfait, the strike is associated with Estevan because it was there that a demonstration was met by members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who killed three strikers in a subsequent clash that lasted 45 minutes. The coal miner's had been organized by the Communist Workers' Unity League.
City rival
Estevan's smalltown rival is the city of Weyburn, located just an hour north of the Energy City. This rivalry has been known to cause dramatic situations, especially at the high school level. The Estevan Comprehensive School and the Weyburn Comprehensive School have had various rallies to raise school spirit, such as "Smash the Trash" in Weyburn, and "Eagle Season" in Estevan. At one point, the popular basketball game series, the Mcleod Series had to be cancelled due to riots. In 2007, some Weyburn fans vandalized the school in Estevan after the game, smashing pictures of teams and tail lights in the parking lot. The rivalry continues, as even City Council points out that Estevan has more jobs available than Weyburn.
