Map of Quebec showing Estrie

The 'Estrie' is an administrative region of Quebec. It is often called ''Les Cantons de l'Est'' in French, a calque of the English term ''Eastern Townships''. Although the administrative and touristic regions called Estrie (or Eastern Townships) are somewhat similar, they are not identical.
Estrie comprises most of the area historically known as the Eastern Townships. It has a land area of 10,209.4 km² (3,941.87 sq mi) and a 2006 census population of 298,779 inhabitants. Its largest population centre is the city of Sherbrooke.
