FEDERATION OF AMERICAN SOCIETIES FOR EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY

(Redirected from FASEB)
The 'Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology', or 'FASEB', is a non-profit federation of 21 societies for biomedical research in the United States. Its mission statement is "to advance biological science through collaborative advocacy for research policies that promote scientific progress and education and lead to improvements in human health."
Founded in 1912 by three societies, FASEB has consistently provided educational meetings and publications to disseminate biological research results. The then six Member Societies met in 1989 to alter its focus and to reaffirm its mission.

FASEB Office of Public Affairs

A hallmark coalition activity, and one for which FASEB is cited as a successful example among scientific disciplines, is the work of the Office of Public Affairs (OPA). OPA activities advance the interests of individual investigators in the biomedical sciences and are guided by FASEB Society Members who serve on the Public Affairs Executive Committee. FASEB is recognized as the principal voice of the biomedical research community on issues related to research funding and research integrity. Public Affairs remains FASEB’s primary focus. Major activities include—
•Government Liaison - identifying issues and communicating FASEB positions to decision makers
•Policy Development - convening consensus conferences and providing support for FASEB committees
•Research - collecting and analyzing data for use in development and advocacy of FASEB and Society positions
•Communication - publishing the FASEB Newsletter, maintaining a public affairs home page on the World Wide Web, and establishing an e-mail network for the rapid dissemination of urgent policy information
•Coalition Building - working with other groups to create a coalition to ensure that the broad views of working scientists are considered
•Public Outreach - developing publications to inform the public and elected officials about the benefits of biomedical research.
FASEB’s unique structure and approach to public affairs gives it a distinct advocacy role and enables the Federation to serve as the leading force in shaping biomedical research policy. By virtue of its size, diversity, and active relationship with working scientists, FASEB is often sought out by legislators, federal agencies, journalists, and other groups developing programs and policies affecting science.
These are just a few of the issues on which FASEB works on behalf of the biomedical research community:
• Federal funding of research
• Animals in research / education
• Training / careers
• Research integrity
• Stem cells / SCNT
• Publication
• Homeland security
• Regulatory burden
• Conflicts of interest
• Technology transfer
• Politicization of science
• Peer review
• Indirect costs
• Genetic nondiscrimination
• Agency reauthorization
• Educating the public on the benefits of biomedical research
• Evolution in science education

Office of Scientific Meetings

The purpose of the Office of Scientific Meetings and Conferences (OSMC) is to advise the Member Societies with regard to all operational and logistical aspects of their meetings. The objective is to ensure that Society Members have a scientifically rewarding experience while working with the organizing Society(ies) to meet fiscal objectives. Responsibilities carried out by OSMC include—
•site selection and negotiation of contracts with convention centers and hotels
•arrangement of airline, rental car, and shuttle bus services
•administration of advance and on-site registration, including deposit of funds and accounting of receipts
•assisting Society committees with budgeting, timelines, and scientific and social programs
•managing scientific exhibits held in conjunction with meetings
•developing and executing a marketing plan for meetings and exhibits.

Career Resources

Biomedical career development is the main focus of FASEB Career Resources. The programs provided by this office have been tailored to provide the ‘right match’ between the job seeker and employer. The state-of-the-art services provide efficient and cost-effective methods for recruitment, placement, and career development, serving the needs of both the biomedical professional and the employer.
FASEB Job Fairs, held at major biomedical research meetings throughout the year, feature—
•up-to-date computerized registration
•search-and-referral, and personal interview scheduling services
•a position description posting area.
Career Development Seminars and Workshops—
are presented by top human resources professionals
cover important employment issues, like resume writing and interviewing skills.
CAREERS OnLine electronic database is a repository of career information where—
•a professional’s credentials can be entered, and stored for up to one year
•records are specially coded to retain confidentiality
•employers enter Position Available Descriptions
•employers can search the applicant files to find a possible match
•applicants have unlimited access to Position Available Descriptions.

FASEB Journal

The FASEB Journal, an essential element of the educational program of the Federation, is the official publication of the Federation.
•FJ is peer-reviewed by an international editorial board comprised of scientists widely recognized in their respective fields, and led by Editor-in-Chief, Gerald Weissmann, MD.
•FJ publishes state-of-the-art reviews, and original multi- and interdisciplinary research communications each month.
•FJ Online includes FJ Express, a revolutionary publishing format for rapid publication of up-to-the-minute science. This format was discontinued by the journal in 2007.
•FJ has a very high citation impact factor and is ranked among the top three in the biology category of the JCR.
•FJ now publishes all articles online months before they appear in the print issue.

MARC Program

The Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program was created by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) to increase the number of biomedical scientists from minority groups. A key objective of the MARC program is the encouragement of minority students in the pursuit of graduate training leading to the Ph. D. degree in the biomedical sciences.

Excellence in Science Award

FASEB awards the Excellence in Science Award to recognize outstanding achievement by women in biological science. All women who are members of one or more of the societies of FASEB will be eligible for nomination. Nominations recognize a woman whose career achievements have contributed significantly to further our understanding of a particular discipline by excellence in research.
