'Fairmont Hotels & Resorts' is a Toronto, Ontario based owner/operator of luxury hotels and resorts in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Bermuda, Barbados, United Kingdom, Monaco, Germany, Switzerland, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates. It holds an 83.5% controlling interest in Fairmont Hotels Inc., a 100% interest in Delta Hotels, and a 23.7% investment interest in Legacy Hotels Real Estate Investment Trust.
Fairmont is known in Canada for its famous historic hotels and resorts such as the Empress Hotel (Victoria) and Hotel Vancouver in British Columbia, the Royal York in Toronto, Banff Springs in Alberta and Château Frontenac in Quebec City. Many of these hotels were originally built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As such, they were operated by Canadian Pacific Hotels and Resorts until CP Hotels purchased Fairmont in 1999 and changed their name to Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. The name change reflected the new international focus of the company and gave name recognition to their subsequently acquired international properties.

History

The original Fairmont name began in 1907 with the namesake in San Francisco. The hotel opened following the great earthquake in the city. It was later acquired by Benjamin H. Swig in 1945.
The Fairmont chain consisted of seven properties in the United States when it merged with Canadian Pacific Hotels & Resorts in 1999:

In early 2006, after a contentious bidding war started by investor Carl Icahn. Ichann lost the bid and Fairmont agreed to be sold for $3.9 billion US. Fairmont announced on January 30, 2006 that the company will be purchased by Colony Capital, LLC and Kingdom Hotels International. It is expected that Fairmont will be integrated into Raffles International/Swissotel, an international luxury chain controlled by affiliates of Colony Capital.
In 2007, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts was named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers, as published in Maclean's magazine, the only hotel operator to receive this honour.^[1]
