FANNIN COUNTY, GEORGIA


'Fannin County' is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was created on January 21, 1854. As of 2000, the population was 19,798. The 2005 Census Estimate shows a population of 21,887 [1]. The county seat is Blue Ridge, Georgia6.

History


The county is named for Georgia native James Fannin, who fought and died during the Texas Revolution. It was the home of the world famous Charles "Dugger" Cole, who gave the area a bit of notoriety because of his incomparable personality. His wife and son still reside there.

Geography


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,014 km² (391 mi²). 999 km² (386 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it (1.45%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 19,798 people, 8,369 households, and 6,008 families residing in the county. The population density was 20/km² (51/mi²). There were 11,134 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.98% White, 0.12% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 8,369 households out of which 25.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.80% were married couples living together, 8.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% were non-families. 25.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.80.
In the county the population was spread out with 20.90% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 28.20% from 45 to 64, and 19.00% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 93.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $30,612, and the median income for a family was $35,258. Males had a median income of $28,728 versus $21,246 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,269. About 10.20% of families and 12.40% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.10% of those under age 18 and 14.20% of those age 65 or over.
