FAREHAM COLLEGE
'Fareham College' is a further education college situated on a 10-acre campus on the western outskirts of the town of Fareham in Hampshire, England. The college's intake mainly comes from the boroughs of Fareham and Gosport, and the surrounding areas of south-east Hampshire. The college currently (2006) has 1,400 full-time and 4,000 part-time students .
Fareham College was formed in 1984 as a merger between an earlier technical college on the same site and the sixth-form college at the historic Price's School (before the latter's site was sold to developers), and became the sole state provider of tertiary education in Fareham.
According to the latest statistics, the college performed significantly worse than most other surrounding sixth form institutions, with most nearby colleges achieving better A-Level results [1], which is consistent with those reported in previous years (200520042003). Because of the generally low results profile, many local students aiming for university are encouraged, often by parents, to commute to institutions in other towns, in preference to attending academic courses at Fareham College.
★ Common state-sector sixth-form colleges chosen instead include St Vincent's College Gosport (5% better results), Havant College (28%), or Peter Symonds College Winchester (62% better), all within commutable distance by public transport [2].
Fareham College has a good reputation for its quota of vocational courses, indeed has been reported to be focusing on these.
★ To develop the full potential of each member of the College Community through high quality learning services
The college offers a wide variety of courses including:
★ Vocational Courses – at various levels from Entry Level to Level 3 National Diplomas.
★ Occupational Courses – developing specialist trade skills in a variety of industries, from Entry Level to NVQ Level 3.
★ Advanced General Certificates – AS/A Levels in the most popular subjects.
★ Higher Education – a 2 year full-time Higher National Diploma course in Performing Arts (Acting).
The Purpose-built campus has recently been updated with salons, engineering workshops, laboratories, a training restaurant, a theatre, art and drama studios, and music and media suites. The main block is an open-plan mall.
