History
Fauquier opened in 1963 and is the oldest high school in Fauquier County. Fauquier has served a primarily rural area, but has experienced a high rate of growth since the 1990s, which led to Liberty High School's opening in 1994.
Demographics
In 2005-2006, Fauquier's student body was 86% White; 8% Black; 5% Hispanic; and 1% Asian.
Accreditation
Fauquier High School is a fully accredited high school based on its performance on the Standards of Learning tests in Virginia.
Academics
Fauquier students often go on to Virginia colleges and universities, like Virginia Tech or George Mason, and a few go on to out-of-state institutions such as Harvard, NYU, Manhattan College, Cal Tech, Vassar, and Reed.
Students in the music department compete at the country, district, state, and East Coast level, often earning top chairs. They have a large marching band program that sits at the top of its division.
Athletics
The mascot is a falcon and the sports teams currently play in the AAA Cedar Run District and Northwest Region. The Falcons have also played in the AAA Commonwealth District for many years, and had a couple stints in the AA Northwestern District, right after Liberty opened.
The Falcons won two sports state championships, the 2002 AA Boys Outdoor Track title and the 2005 AA Girls Outdoor Track title. The boys basketball team also won awards for sportsmanship in 1991 as a AAA school and in 1997 as a AA school. In 1997 the girls' soccer team won the AA region championship, but there was no state championship competition that year. In 2004, the girls' softball team won the AA Northwestern District title and advanced to the state championship.
