'Fayetteville' is a village located in Onondaga County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the village had a population of 4,190. The village is named after Lafayette, a national hero of both France and the United States.
The 'Village of Fayetteville' is located in the Town of Manlius, east of the City of Syracuse of which it is a suburb.

History


Fayetteville is in the former Central New York Military Tract. The community was first settled around 1792.
It was previously known as "Manlius Four Corners."
Fayetteville was first incorporated in 1844 and re-named after the Marquis de Lafayette {note that the Town of LaFayette in the county is also named after the Marquis). The village was re-incorporated in 1871.
Famous inhabitants of Fayetteville

United States President Grover Cleveland called Fayetteville his childhood home for some time. Across the street from the old home of Cleveland is that of suffragist and civil rights activist Matilda Joslyn Gage, who was born in nearby Cicero, called Fayetteville home for the vast majority of her life. She is interred at the Fayetteville Cemetery. Fayetteville has produced one Major League Baseball player...outfielder Sandy Griffin. (b. October 24, 1858).

Fayetteville is in Central New York, on New York State Route 5, at (43.028516, -76.004268).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²), all land.
New York State Route 5 and New York State Route 257 intersect in Fayetteville.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there were 4,190 people, 1,830 households, and 1,141 families residing in the village.

Education


Public K-12 education is served by the Fayetteville-Manlius Central School District. Schools situated within the village include Fayetteville Elementary School, Mott Road Elementary School, and Wellwood Middle School.
