FIELD OF DREAMS (DUBUQUE COUNTY, IOWA)

The 'Field of Dreams' is a baseball field and pop-culture tourist attraction built originally for the movie of the same name. It is located in Dubuque County, Iowa, near Dyersville.
The studio built the baseball diamond on two actual farms a few miles outside Dyersville. When production completed, the baseball diamond created for the movie was left behind. Most of the field, including the diamond and the adjacent house, was on one farm owned by the Lansing family, but left and center field were on an adjacent property owned by the Averkamp family. After filming was completed, the Lansing family kept their portion of the field intact, and added a small hut where visitors could buy souvenirs. The Averkamp family returned their land to farming for a year, but then restored the remainder of the field and opened up their own souvenir hut. The two owners had operated separate tourist facilities, and had also been at odds regarding commercialization of the site.
In August of 2007, Rita Averkamp sold the land containing her portion of the field to Don and Becky Lansing - the owners of the remainder of the field. As a result the movie site is now entirely under the control of the Lansing family.^[1]

The stadium is 281 feet to left field, 314 to center and 262 to right field. It holds 84 people.

Directions

The baseball field is located several miles outside the city of Dyersville. To get to the field from U.S. Highway 20, take Iowa Highway 136 north through Dyersville. When coming in from the north by US Highway 52, take 136 south from Luxemburg, Iowa. Remain on 136 for approximately 9 miles. On the northern edge of town, there is a sign saying "Field of Dreams Movie Site." At that point, turn on to Dyersville East Road. Drive on Dyersville East Road for about three miles. A billboard for the baseball field has been placed at the intersection of Dyersville East Road and Lansing Road. Turn right onto Lansing Road. Go about one mile on Lansing Road, there will be two signs for the field - either the Lansing Family or the neighbor's sign. Also the blacktop ends at that point. Turn left on to one of the two driveways. On busier days it may be necessary to park some distance from the field, but on slower days parking facilities are often available next to the field.
The field is open daily from 9am until 6pm. Due to insurance requirements, the operators cannot provide equipment (balls, bats, etc), but visitors are welcome to bring their own equipment.
Dyersville has a significant number of other attractions for a small town in Iowa: The Basilica of St. Francis Xavier, the National Farm Toy Museum, and the Ertl Farm Toys factory.

Netflix Rolling Roadshow

In August of 2006, Netflix sponsored a "Rolling Roadshow" honoring a small, handful of films by screening them in locations unique to each film. On August 11th, they had a viewing of Field of Dreams at the actual site of filming in Dyersville, Iowa. A giant, outdoor screen was set up adjacent to the field with seating, concessions, and parking along left and center field. Before the screening of the film, Kevin Costner and his as of yet unnamed-band performed for two hours for the attending crowd of close to 1,000 people. Costner and his band played a selection of original and popular covers, including a song about Iowa that he wrote during the filming of Field of Dreams 17 years earlier.
The event was hosted by Lisa Loeb.
