The 'first air raid on Singapore' was conducted by seventeen bombers of the
Imperial Japanese Navy. The attack began at around 4:00 a.m., shortly after Japanese forces
landed on Kota Bahru. The streets were still lighted despite air raid sirens going off in time. Allied anti-aircraft guns immediately returned fire. The British battleships
''Prince of Wales'' and
''Repulse'' also joined in, but no aircraft was shot down.
The bombers safely returned to their airfield in
Saigon.
Raffles Place,
Tengah airfield and
Seletar airfield were all hit by the bombing. The raid killed 61 people and left more than 700 injured. Majority of the wounded were troops of the
2/2nd Gurkha Rifles.
