'Flatwoods' refers to an ecological community in the Southeastern coastal plain of North America. Flatwoods are a fire maintained ecosystem dominated by

★ longleaf pine ''Pinus palustris'',

★ slash pine ''Pinus elliotii'',

★ saw palmetto ''Serenoa repens'', and

★ gallberry ''Ilex glabra''.
A number of rare animals are typical of this habitat including

★ Red-cockaded Woodpecker (''Picoides borealis''),

★ Flatwoods Salamander (''Ambystoma cingulatum'') and

★ Striped newts (''Notophthalmus perstriatus'').
