FLOYDS KNOBS, INDIANA

(Redirected from Floyds Knobs)
'Floyds Knobs' is a small community in Floyd County, Indiana, United States. Historically, it has been a farming community on the outskirts of New Albany, Indiana but it has become a bedroom community for Louisville, Kentucky.
Floyds Knobs primarily contains subdivisions, farms, small shopping centers and churches. The community is also known for its schools. These include Floyd Central High School, Floyds Knobs Elementary School, Galena Elementary School, and Community Montessori School.
Historically, the oldest commercial area in the community was at the intersection of Scottsville Road and Paoli Pike. This intersection is located at top of the knobs, along the primary route from New Albany to Floyds Knobs (before I-64 was constructed). However, the Highway 150 exit off Interstate 64 has resulted in substantial commercial and residential development west of the historic center.
The town was named after Colonel Davis Floyd. James Moore built a gristmill here in 1815. The word "knobs" comes from the local terrain. During the last Ice Age, the glaciers advanced south to this area, moving mass amounts of rock and dirt in the process. As one approaches Floyds Knobs from the south, steep hills rising 400-500 feet begin on the northern outskirts of New Albany, Indiana. These hills, or knobs, are the remains of that rock and dirt, at the southernmost point of the glaciers.
