FRäNKISCHE SAALE

Fränkische Saale by Hammelburg

The 'Fränkische Saale' or 'Franconian Saale' is a 136 km long river in Bavaria, Germany. It is a right-bank tributary of the Main, in Lower Franconia. It should not be confused with the larger "Saxon" Saale, which is a tributary to the river Elbe.
The Fränkische Saale flows through Bad Königshofen, Bad Neustadt, Bad Kissingen, Hammelburg and flows into the river Main in Gemünden am Main.

Source

The source of the Fränkische Saale is in the Rhön Mountains, Rhön-Grabfeld district. Two places claim to be source of the Saale, 1) Alsleben (''Fränkische Saale Quelle'') and 2) between Sternberg and Obereßfeld ('' Saale Quelle''). The source to the east of Alsleben is a well-maintained large spring. A possible third source is Brennhausen.
