FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, PORTAGE COUNTY, OHIO

'Franklin Township' is one of the eighteen townships of Portage County, Ohio, United States. The 2000 census found 5,276 people in the township.^[1]

Geography

Located in the western part of the county, it borders the following townships and cities:

★ Streetsboro - north

★ Shalersville Township - northeast corner

★ Ravenna Township - east

★ Rootstown Township - southeast corner

★ Brimfield Township - south

★ Kent - southwest

★ Stow - west

★ Hudson - northwest corner
All or parts of three municipalities are located in land that was formerly part of Franklin Township:

★ The village of Brady Lake, in the east (seceeded from township in 1993) [1]

★ Most of the city of Kent, in the southwest (seceeded from township in 1993) [2]

★ A small part of the village of Sugar Bush Knolls, in the north
Outside of these municipalities, Franklin Township has an area of 13 mi².

Name and history

It is one of twenty-one Franklin Townships statewide.
Franklin Township was formed from the Connecticut Western Reserve. It was initially 25 square miles and was purchased by Aaron Olmstead at a cost of 12.5 cents an acre. Olmstead named the township after his son, Franklin Olmstead. The first settlers, the Haymakers, came in December of 1805 and settled along the Cuyahoga River in what would become the city of Kent. Initially, the settlement was simply "Franklin," but later as mills began to spring up along the river the village became known as "Franklin Mills" before officially changing the name to Kent in 1867^[2].

Government

The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees. As of 2006, the trustees are Mark Beckwith, Keith Benjamin, and Gary Falstad, and the fiscal officer is Sue Lucas.^[3]
