'Professor Frederick Burkhardt' is the President Emeritus of the American Council of Learned Socities (ACLS), whose decades of work on The Correspondence of Charles Darwin constitute a signal example of dedication to a demanding and ambitious scholarly enterprise. He is an Honorary Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge University.
