History

"The Tribesmen" as Galway United are known won the FAI Cup in 1991, and Football League of Ireland Cup in 1985-86 and 1996-97. The clubs best league finish to date was runners up to Shamrock Rovers in 1985-86. They were First Division champions in 1992-93, runners-up in 1999 and won the First Division Shield in 1992-93 and 1996-97.
The year 2006 looked hopeful for United but a title-challenging year ended sadly as the team failed on the final hurdle. In December 2006 the FAI announced that Galway United had been invited to participate in the new FAI eircom National League Premier Division following a successful application process. By doing so they controversially beat Dundalk F.C. and Waterford United F.C. to the Premier Division spot. Four players were chosen in the First Division team of the year (Raffael Cretaro, Ciaran Foley, Conor Gethins & Derek O'Brien). In July 2007, the new 1,500 seater stand at Terryland Park was opened, increasing the seated capacity to 2,900.[1]
