GARDEN CITY, SOUTH CAROLINA


'Garden City' or sometimes known as 'Garden City Beach' is a census-designated place (CDP) in Horry County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,357 at the 2000 census.

Garden City is located at (33.587760, -79.005221).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.1 km² (5.5 mi²). 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.83%) is water.

Demographics


As of the census of 2000, there were 9,357 people, 4,703 households, and 2,873 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 674.0/km² (1,745.1/mi²). There were 7,995 housing units at an average density of 575.9/km² (1,491.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.02% White, 1.00% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.12% of the population.
There were 4,703 households out of which 12.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% were married couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% were non-families. 31.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.96 and the average family size was 2.40.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 11.2% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 21.5% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and 34.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 54 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $34,967, and the median income for a family was $40,403. Males had a median income of $27,683 versus $22,904 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $24,062. About 2.9% of families and 5.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.4% of those under age 18 and 3.5% of those age 65 or over.

Hurricane Hazel


The worst disaster in the city's history occurred on 14 October 1954. Hurricane Hazel slammed into the city and left only 2 houses habitable.

Garden City Golf Cart Parade


The Garden City Golf Cart Parade was a 4th of July parade ran by golf carts. It was the community tradition for almost 30 years. It started at Calhoun Drive behind Willards Fireworks. The last golf cart parade was on July 4th, 2007 because the lot behind Willards Fireworks will be built up.
