GENERAL TINIO, NUEVA ECIJA

'General Tinio' is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Nueva Ecija, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 35,352 people in 6,878 households. The town is at the foot of the Sierra Mountain Ridges and adjoining the Fort Magsaysay Army Reservation on the eastside. The municipalities of San Miguel, Bulacan, Peñaranda and San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija.

Brief History of General Tinio, Nueva Ecija.

According to the story passed on from one generation to another, the town got its name because of miscommunication between the natives and the Spanish colonizers. A native settler when asked by a Spanish soldier "Llama el pueblo?" kindly replied "Papaya" referring to the particular fruit tree growing abundantly in the place (not understanding the Spanish language). The name stuck to the Spanish colonizers and the place from then on was called "PAPAYA".
Papaya was a sitio of Bo. Mapisong which was then a barrio of Gapan, Nueva Ecija (now Gapan City). Bo. Mapisong became a town in 1851 changing its name to Peñaranda after a Spanish engineer Jose Maria Peñaranda. Papaya became one of its barangays. Papaya became a town on January 1, 1921 through the collaborative efforts of Capitan Mamerto Padolina who was then the Secretary of the Governor of the Province, Judge Segundo Bernardo and Francisco Padolina.
On August 19, 1957, Congressman Celestino Juan sponsored a congressional act changing the name of Papaya to General Tinio in honor of General Manuel Tinio, a noble and prominent revolutionary leader against the Spaniards known as Magiting. General Tinio hailed from the Province of Nueva Ecija.

General Characteristics

Farming is the livelihood of majority of the residents. Even though located at the foot of the Sierra Madre Mountain Ridges, the topography is generally plain and ideal to agricultural products such as palay and vegetables production. Others industries include furniture and fixtures, backyard poultry, cattle and livestock, vegetable production and minor agricultural inputs like duck raising. "Ikmo" or betel leaves production is one dying symbol of the town. The remittances of numerous sons and daughters abroad keep the economy of the town afloat. Among many, Papaya Residents of East Coast America, Inc. (PRECA) founded in 1996 and based in 414 Windsor Road, Bergenfield, N. J. 07621 headed by Pompeia M. Capati can be trusted to answer any call of the town for development assistance.
Roman Catholic dominates religious concentration with Iglesia ni Cristo, Baptist, Methodist, and other sects attracting its own followers. "Sabong" or cockfight is the favorite pastime of the male population. There are a lot of sabong afficionados in the town religiously attending weekly "tupada" or what is termed "Sunday adult school". The town's patron saint, San Isidro de Labrador is being feted every May 11, 2006.
The town is best noted in having the most number of brass bands in the Philippines with 15 organized bands, 12 of which are active and sought after to enhance entertainment ambience in fiestas and other traditional rites such as wakes. The Family band is the most popular one and have produced champions in majorette exhibition, solo flute competition, solo clarinet competition, solo trumpet competition, french horn competition, etc., in national brass band competitions and the famous musician is Mr Larry R Bautista a flute champion of NMCYA and a graduate of conservatory of Music from University of Sto. Tomas.
The town also has places of interest notably the Minalungao National Park which is a favorite swimming destinations in summer specially during Black Saturday where it is usually filled with local bathers and visitors. Minalungao literally means "mine of gold in a cave" have several caves which can explored by more fearless ones attracting several visitors every summer. The river also has a portion where a stone ledge located about 15 meters high from the river can be used as spring board by fearless divers showing off to yearly visitors to the park.
Civic Associations:
Boy Poklat Guild
Boy Poklat Guild is a crusade dedicated to the up-to-date maintenance of the image of the Municipality of General Tinio. The guild is composed of native Papayanons committed to the development of the town. The name of the guild is a representative presentation of the true nature of its residents. Papayanons are true-bloodied Pinoys who can laugh at crisis and calamities.
Boy Poklat Guild shall launch on July 19, 2007 its maiden literary attempt. The book which shall be written entirely in the local dialect of "purong Tagalog Papaya" is aptly titled "Ang Pakikibaka Ni Boy Poklat". It shall chronicle the adventures and misadventures of the main character Boy Poklat during the period of Beatles popularity. The book will be enlightening as it will introduce malalalim na Tagalog workds like pangod, berat, minamakuya, atbp. The book will be an attempt to capture all the bansags (aliases) bestowed by the community to some of the people and try to document its origin and meaning like: Balibol, Dupil, Salibaryok, Bayawak, Alinsangan, Tuko and many others.
Indira Padolina Dayupay Charitable Association, Inc.
Indira Padolina Dayupay Charitable Association Inc. (IPDCAI) was established from a life-long commitment of founding Chairperson Indira Padolina Dayupay to uplift the welfare, socio-economic, spiritual and moral life of less fortunate people in the community.
Since 2002, close to a thousand elementary, high school and college students have benefited from the foundation’s scholarship assistance. Free pre-school education was also offered by the foundation when seven (7) IPDCAI Learning Centers were opened in 2006. To date, this program has benefited more than 200 underprivileged children from far flung areas of General Tinio.
Along with youth oriented programs, members of the foundation also established the IPDCAI Women’s League in 2004 with the main goal of imparting the importance of self-reliance, propagating Christian values within the family and solidarity among all women in the community. Aside from providing livelihood opportunities to the local women’s sector, the IPDCAI Women’s League extends medical, hospitalization and burial benefits to its members, their husbands and qualified dependents.
This coming July 27, 2007, the foundation will be celebrating a major milestone which is its 5th year anniversary. The anniversary theme is "Matatag na Pamilya, Matatag na Pamayanan, Matatag na Kinabukasan" translated in English as "A stable family, a stable community and a secured future!"
