He was the eldest son of the Prince Frederick Johann (second son of Georg II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen) and Adelaide of Lippe-Biesterfeld.
After the death of his uncle Bernhard III, in 1928, Georg assumed the headship of the house of Saxe-Meiningen and the title of Duke of Saxe-Meiningen only nominal (as ''Georg III''), because Bernhard III lost the duchy in 1918.

# Anton Ulrich (b. Jena, 23 December 1919 - killed in action, Albert-sur-Somme, 20 May 1940).
# Frederick Alfred Carl Ludwig Vincenz Maria (b. Jena, 5 April 1921 - d. Bennington, 18 September 1997); he was a Carthusian monk and allowed the succession to pass him by in favor of his uncle.
# Marie Elisabeth (b. Jena, 18 December 1922 - d. Jena, 31 March 1923).
# Regina Helene Elisabeth Margarete (b. Würzburg, 6 January 1925), married on 10 May 1951 to Archduke Otto von Habsburg, Crown Prince of the Austrian Empire.
On his death the headship of the Ducal house of Saxe-Meiningen passed to his younger brother Prince Bernhard as Georg's son Frederick Alfred allowed the succession to skip him.
