GEORG VON ARCO
The physicist 'George William Alexander Hans count von Arco' (August 30, 1869 [Upper Silesia (today Gorzyce/Poland)] - May 5, 1940 [Berlin]) was one of the joint founders of the Telefunken company, which was called "''society for wireless telegraphy''" at that time. Count 'Georg von Arco' was a German radio pioneer. By trade, he was a engineer and the technical director of Telefunken. He was crucial in the European development of wireless technology.
He served for a time as an assistant to Adolf Slaby (who, it should be noted, was close to the Kaiser). Until 1930, the responsibilities of Arco was as one of the two managing directors of the society for its scientific-technologic range and participated responsible in the development of high performance tube transmitters. Together with his teacher, Adolf Slaby, he was considerably involved in the study and development of high-frequency engineering in Germany. He was Monist and pacifist. Between 1921/1922, he was a chairman of the German Monistenbundes.

Early years
Count Georg von Arco came as a son of the realm count Alexander Karl von Arco on the family-own manor into large fermenting contactor (Upper Silesia) to the world. It was interested already as a child in machines of all kinds, did not study after his Abitur on the Breslauer Maria Magdalenen High School (1889) however nevertheless not engineering sciences, but visited mathematical and physical lectures at the University of Berlin and hit afterwards the officer career. For its father it was natural that the members of its family became either farmers or officers. After three years with the military however its life changed, in order to study from 1893 on the TH Charlottenburg mechanical engineering and electro-technology from Arco. There he became acquainted with also professor Adolf Slaby. Slaby was the only foreigner, who was allowed to participate in Marconis transmission attempts in the English channel coast.
Constructing on these attempts Arco and Slaby in the summer served 1897 the bell tower of the welfare and church at the haven of Sacrow as antenna, in order to verify and understand Marconis of attempts. Here the first German antenna system for wireless telegraphy was established. On 27 August the signal transmission succeeded to 1.6 kilometers removed for imperial sailor station „Kongsnaes “on the opposite bank of the young remote lake in the swan all in potsdam.
1928 a Gedenktafel over the Eingangstür of the Campanile, created by Hermann Hosaeus, refer to this attempt. In the center of the board, which is worked from green dolomite, is Atlas surrounded with the world ball, by lightnings and the memorandum: At this place established 1897 Professor Adolf Slaby and count von Arco the first German antenna system for wireless traffic. On 7 October 1897 a first radio link from Berlin beautiful mountain succeeded to summers to rank village and already in the following could Jüterbog removed into that approximately 60 kilometers be sent.
AEG
To the end of its study Oberspree of the AEG went from Arco 1898 as an engineer to the cable works. At first Arco was responsible as a laboratory engineer for the examination of different cable types, could however by continual contact with Slaby the wireless telegraphy at AEG introduce and develop.
Telefunken
Patentstreitigkeiten between Siemens and AEG led to it that both companies on go-eat emperors Wilhelm II. a common enterprise based, the society for wireless telegraphy Ltd., that company, whose telegraph address Telefunken interspersed itself in the course of the time as company name. Arco could increase particularly in the start time of the transmitter technology the achievement and thus the range of the transmitters considerably. For this he turned into on Löschfunkensender from max Vienna, which already once exhibited a substantially better efficiency than Knallfunkensender of Ferdinand brown and in addition on narrow frequency band could send.
Large radio station
From Arcos largest earnings/services existed in the development of the large radio station Nauen, help it thereby Telefunken nevertheless to the ascent to the firm of world-wide reputation. 1909 he equipped it with Löschfunksender, with which she changed herself of a research station into a station with regular radio traffic. Now contact could be taken up with the Africa colonies and the naval warfare fleet. One decade later, 1918, had even increased tenfold the transmitting power, which functioned however only with a completely new transmitter technology, with that already 1912 introduced high frequency machine transmitter with magnetic frequency converter. This permitted for the first time to produce hardly absorbed waves with high achievement. At this development was completely substantially involved of Arco, also it energized an arising of the electron tubes of experiments thereby right after.
While Adolf Slaby strove beside for the university, operated from Arco philosophical activities. It closed the Monistenbewegung and the citizen of Berlin circle for empirical philosophy just as to as the pazifistischen movement at present the First World War, thus as initial member and a chairman of the federation new native country. It belonged to the German Monistenbund, whose chairman was he 1921 to 1922. 1923 he was joint founder of the society of the friends of new Russia, whereby he his 60. Birthday in Moscow celebrated, what for someone in its position was very unusual.
Death and afterwards
After his death a citizen of Berlin received honour funeral from Arco. The maintained grave is on the enormous park cemetery Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf. At the house Albrechtstrasse 49/50 in the Berlin Tempelhofer local part Mariendorf attached the senate a Gedenktafel. In Berlin Charlottenburg reminds since 1950 the Arcostrasse, the former Havelstrasse, of the Wegbereiter of the radio engineering. Also in Nauen - here Telefunken had a transmission place since beginning 20. Century in enterprise - one exists after it designated road.
