GEORGE COLBY

'George Colby' was a British privateer during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). He was the leader of the so-called Colby Pirates, who operated along the Great Lakes frontier between the British and French North American colonies. Colby's usual practice was to rig false light beacons to lure French ships into running aground. Colby's men would then row out in small boats to board and capture them. Colby's privateer status was officially revoked by King George III in 1764, after the war had ended, and little is known of him after that.
