Origins
Georgetown is named after George Moate. one of the owners of the area who acquired land in the general area of Georgetown in 1853 he then subdivided the estate[1]. Georgetown began as a residential area for workers from industries like the Copper Smelting Works (Goninans) located near by. By 1880, Georgetown was already described as a prosperous villageNewcastle City Council, Discover our Suburbs.
