The 'Georgia Department of Transportation' ('GDOT') is the
government agency responsible for building and maintaining state
roads in the
U.S. state of
Georgia. Their
headquarters is located across the street from the
Georgia State Capitol in
Atlanta.
History
An act of the Legislature created the State Highway Department on August 16, 1916. Later, in 1972, it was followed by the creation of the Georgia Department of Transportation. The duties of the Georgia Department of Transportation are to plan, construct, maintain and improve Georgia's road and bridges. Moreover, the department provides planning and financial support for mass transit and airports and provides planning airports and air safety. Finally, the Department of Transportation provides administrative assistance to the
State Road and Tollway Authority and the
Georgia Rail Passenger Authority.
