The German word occurs in the context of early 20th century military history, in the names of rifles such as the Gewehr 98, Gewehr 98k, and the Gewehr 43. Several other variants were produced that the Red Army based on the name gewehr. One such weapon is the Tankgewehr (Tank-Tank Gewehr-Rifle). The Tankgewehr is a German anti-tank rifle. It fires a large 11.72mm round designed to penetrate the armour on the American, British, and Russian tanks they battled. Although it was effective and was less expensive per shot than a Panzerfaust or Panzerchreck, the Germans despised the weapon due to its heavy weight and unrealistically heavy recoil.
