GIANCARLO ANTOGNONI


'Giancarlo Antognoni', (April 1, 1954 in Marsciano) is a former football player from Italy. He played offensive midfielder, mainly with Fiorentina. He won the 1982 FIFA World Cup with the Italian national team.

His career started in the Italian Serie D with the club of Astimacobi, he was only sixteen. In 1972, Nils Liedholm convinced him to join Fiorentina.
He made his debut in Italian Serie A in October 1972 with Fiorentina, and won the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) in 1976.
Antognoni played 412 games with Fiorentina and scored 61 goals.

National team


Antognoni's international career started in 1974, with a game against The Netherlands at the age of twenty. He won the 1982 FIFA World Cup, played the semi-final but could not play the final because of an injury.
He received 73 caps (7 goals), his last one when playing against Czechoslovakia in November 1983. He was four times captain of the national team.
