![]() | Galloping Gertie 1940 and Tacoma Narrows Bridges 1950 & 2007 This film shows actual remains of the 1940 Tacoma, Washington Narrows bridge that collapsed, as well as the existing 1950 Sturdy Gertie replacement bridge, and the new 2007 Naroows bridge under construction. The film was shot from various locations under & around the bridges. The noise in the background is the TNC workers grinding rough edges down prior to painting. The video starts on the Gig Harbor shore and shows the 1950 bridge & 2007 bridge being worked on. The shots of concrete & wire on the shore are actual pieces of Galloping Gertie after it was torn down. Then the video carries up & underneath the 1950 bridge, panning over to the 2007 bridge. The video finishes with some panoramic views of both bridges taken from the Narrows Park shore. At the video end is the original 1950 utility buildings from the Tacoma side on the old bridge. These shots are no longer possible, as the flow of traffic has been reversed, so that nobody drives from the Gig Harbor side towards the Tacoma side on the old bridge anymore. All lanes on the old bridge now travel from Tacoma to Gig Harbor, and all lanes on the new 2007 bridge travel from Gig Harbor to Tacoma. |

![]() | Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collapse "Gallopin' Gertie" Watch the amazing "Gallopin' Gertie" November 7, 1940 video clip. 1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge Slender, elegant and graceful, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge stretched like a steel ribbon across Puget Sound in 1940. The third longest suspension span in the world opened on July 1st. Only four months later, the great span's short life ended in disaster. "Galloping Gertie," collapsed in a windstorm on November 7,1940. The bridge became famous as "the most dramatic failure in bridge engineering history." Now, it's also "one of the world's largest man-made reefs." The sunken remains of Galloping Gertie were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 to protect her from salvagers. A dramatic tale of failure and success The story of the failure of the 1940 Narrows Bridge and the success of the Current Narrows Bridge is a great American saga. When Galloping Gertie splashed into Puget Sound, it created ripple effects across the nation and around the world. The event changed forever how engineers design suspension bridges. Gertie's failure led to the safer suspension spans we use today. |
![]() | Pieces of a Poetic Family When challenged to make an inspirational video using poetry, the freshman class at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, WA, prevailed. After composing poems based on Nikki Giovanni's "Ego-Tripping," a small group of dedicated poets, artists, and musicians assembled the best lines, orchestrated fitting music, and photographed several hundred freshmen. They did these things to elucidate and enlighten the soul. All pictures used with permission. (Unpictured freshmen were absent or declined to have their picture taken.) Text of the poem: PIECES OF A POETIC FAMILY I was married to the mountains I was born on the icy caps of Everest, cousin of the clouds I shower in the temperate rainforest My every waking thought dictates daily waterfall I am the sister of sunshine I roam the earth, scorching day with silent night I am so magnificent, so majestic, so superb I am prestigious I was one hundred feet under and cried the Columbia Not only do I travel to Mecca, I live there I sailed across the world tracing lines of latitude and longitude I am inconceivable My gravity aligns moons in ecliptic patterns I reached up and grabbed it leaving fingerprints on its surface The Sahara makes up my sandbox I drove a stake in the ground and split Pangaea I was once sad and my tears salinated the ocean I scribbled on a map with a Sharpie and called it the Black Death I am the creator of pulp fiction master of sci-fi and the reason for popular belief Men created stories of gods because they don't understand me I built the lighthouse at Alexandria I rock I sailed the ocean blue to conceal a world of knowing I took cover in a bunker to conceal myself from an atomic wasteland Atlantis was my bath toy, Poseidon walks beside me I can never make a single mistake except by my appropriate approval Mother Nature bows to me She created mountains so I could touch the sky She created the great lakes so I could splash It was I who laid the first slab of concrete on God's green earth I returned to the homeland and planted fruit for my relatives For them I also brought drums They are often heard as thunder over your world I stand for what in my eyes is true My voice reflects the citizens; thoughts The stars shine with a mere half my radiance |
