GIRL'S TYME
'Girl's Tyme' was the original group name of the group that became Destiny's Child. The group notably competed and lost on Star Search. It is interesting to note that other well-known artists who were once a part of Girl's Tyme are not currently members of Destiny's Child.
In 1992, 30 eager 10-year old girls auditioned on stage in Houston,Texas, each of them hoping to be one of the lucky six chosen to form a new group call Girls Tyme. After a long day of rehearsals and callbacks Támar Davis,(12), Beyoncé Knowles,(10), Kelly Rowland,(11), and dancers/rappers LaTavia Roberson,(10), Nikki Taylor,(13),and her sister Nina Taylor,(11), Earned positions in the group that would be manage by Andretta Tillman 1.
Immediately, Girls Tyme began practicing six hours a day on a variety of R&B, Rap,and Pop songs, hoping to create there own unique sound. They choreographed dance routines to accompany the songs and began appearing in venues all over the Houston area, Black expo, Miss Black Houston Metroplex Pageant, and Peoples Workshop Sammy Davis Jr. Awards.
The young performers garnered attention and were profiled in The Houston Chronicle, where a music critic predicted they would someday be stars. The expectations were high as Girl Tyme prepared for their first national exposure on the television show Star Search. They hoped that a first place win would guarantee their future success in show business. After all, Star Search had helped launch the careers of many entertainers.
Unfortunately,Girls Tyme did not walk away with a first-place trophy. What was hoped to have been their big break instead turned out to be the first of many failing small break-ups for the young performers. Three of the six girls remained, Beyonce, Kelly, and LaTavia. A fourth member LeToya Luckett was added. The group also added a new manager, Matthew Knowles. Now all
they needed was a new name to celebrate their renewed commitment.
In the following months the group tried out a few names: Cliché, Something Fresh, The Dolls and Destiny. But nothing seemed to click to Tina Knowles who became the group stylist. She came across a page marked with the girls picture in her Bible. In The Book of Isaiah the word Destiny caught her eye, Matthew added child. The new name of the band would be Destinys Child.
