'Gnadenhutten' is a village located on the
Tuscarawas River in
Tuscarawas County,
Ohio,
United States. The population was 1,280 at the
2000 census.
Gnadenhutten was founded as a settlement of German and
Lenape Native Americans affiliated with the
Moravian church. This community remained neutral during the
American Revolutionary War, but ninety-six of them were
massacred in 1782 by American revolutionaries in retaliation for raids carried out by other bands.

Gnadenhutten is located at (40.360815, -81.431679). According to the
United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.6
km² (1.0
mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the
census of 2000, there were 1,280 people, 513 households, and 377 families residing in the village. The
population density was 494.2/km² (1,281.7/mi²). There were 539 housing units at an average density of 208.1/km² (539.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.45%
White, 0.08%
African American, and 0.47% from two or more races.
Hispanic or
Latino of any race were 0.16% of the population.
There were 513 households out of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% were
married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the village the population was spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.8 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $34,286, and the median income for a family was $38,000. Males had a median income of $32,026 versus $20,526 for females. The
per capita income for the village was $15,961. About 9.3% of families and 8.8% of the population were below the
poverty line, including 12.0% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.
