GORDON YOUNG
Born October 15, 1919, in McPherson, Kansas, 'Gordon Young' was recognized as one of the most brilliant organists in the United States. He was also a prolific and talented composer of both organ and choral works. A number of his church anthems have become standard repertoire fare, and his name is known and respected wherever fine church music is admired.
His undergraduate degree in music was earned at Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas. Following that he was a scholarship pupil at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and received his Doctor of Sacred Music from Southwestern in 1964. A member of ASCAP, he received 18 consecutive annual awards for his contributions to serious literature. His published works total over 800.
Most of his career he served as an educator, choirmaster/organist and was in great demand as a concert recitalist.
He died October 2, 1998 in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.
