'Grandfather Clock' was a regular, continuing character on ''Captain Kangaroo'', the long-running (1955-84) CBS-TV children's morning television program. Since Grandfather Clock was very old, he was always asleep when Captain Kangaroo came into the set, known as the "Treasure House". The young viewers at home were instructed to awaken Grandfather by saying, "One, Two, Three...Grandfather". However, the good Captain admonished the children to speak softly, as Grandfather was quite old and they would not want to startle him.
