GREAT YARMOUTH RAILWAY STATION

'Great Yarmouth railway station' is a railway station serving the town of Great Yarmouth in the English county of Norfolk. The station is the terminus of the Wherry Line 29 km (18¼ miles) from Norwich. There are two different routes to Norwich, one via Acle and the other via Reedham.
The station is served by 'one', with majority of services operating to Norwich via Acle. A few services operate via the remote village of Berney Arms and Reedham. Monday to Fridays, there is also a direct train to London Liverpool Street in the morning, returning in the evening. This line joins the line from Lowestoft just east of Reedham railway station.
Most services are operated by diesel multiple units of Classes 150, 153, 156 or 170. For a short period of time in late 2004 and early 2005, the direct London service was formed of an Intercity set of Mk2 carriages along with a 90 locomotive, which due to the lack of electrification was dragged from Norwich by a 47, but various issues lead to this returning to a 170. For a number of years, 'one' and predecessor Anglia Railways had also run direct Intercity trains of this sort from London to Great Yarmouth over the summer holiday period to cope with the extra passengers although this has now been stopped in favour of a direct service to Lowestoft via the East Suffolk Line from London.
Facilities include; a ticket office, a small newagents and coffee kiosk, a burger van, public telephones, waiting room, toilets (disabled), bicycle and taxi ranks, bus stop and taxi office.

Before the Beeching Axe the station was one of three major railway stations in the town^[1]. Beach Station was located on Nelson Road and was owned by M&GN who run services up the Norfolk coast to Melton Constable and Peterborough. It was closed in 1959 and is now a coach station although plans exist to turn the area into offices. Yarmouth Southtown station was also owned by M&GN and run services through Gorleston and Lowestoft to join with the current East Suffolk Line for a mainline service to London. It was closed in 1970.
Yarmouth Vauxhall, now just Great Yarmouth, is the only station to remain open. Services used to be run by Great Eastern Railway, and later LNER to Norwich. It was opened in 1844 when the line to Norwich through Reedham became one of the first railways in the country to open. The station was extensivley damaged in World War II and was rebuilt in 1960. There used to be large sidings and an engine shed before they were demolished to make way for the new Asda superstore and bypass.
