'''Gullah Gullah Island''' (December 1, 1994-January 1, 1998) was a children's television series created by Ron and Natalie Daise shown on Nick Jr. and the first show designed for preschoolers to feature a Gullah family. The show stars Ron and Natalie Daise. As they guide viewers through Gullah culture, Ron and Natalie are accompanied by three children (Simeon, Shaina, and James), their niece (Vanessa), and a frog named Binya Binya Pollywog. The family lived on a fictional island that was near Charleston, South Carolina. The Downtown area was featured in one episode when the family took a trip to the city.
''TV Guide'' selected ''Gullah Gullah Island'' as one of their top ten children's television shows in 1996. The show had relatively high ratings during its daytime run in the 1990s.
The show ''Clarissa Explains It All'' was shot on the set (interior and exterior). Modifications were made, like adding brighter colors to the home in Gullah Gullah. The backyard was used on earlier episodes of ''All That'' as well.
Their adventures feature singing, dancing, and being active, encouraging children in the audience to follow along too.
The show ran for four seasons starting in 1994. It continued to air in reruns and on Noggin until 2004.
Possibly, a reason many people know of this show is the famous icebreaker from the show the kids would play that really took off.
Usually played with a hula hoop on the ground, or a jump rope, it goes:
Everyone says "Jump in, jump out. Turn yourself about. Jump in, jump out, introduce yourself!"
As they do that, person jumping rope during this would jump in and out as they said, and jump in a circle for turn yourself about. If using a hula hoop, just jump in it, out of it, do a hula for turn yourself (if you want).
Person then says "My name is ____. I like to ___. I'm going to____ every day of my life." (ex. "My name is Sam, I like to dance, I'm going to dance, every day of my life")
Then everyone repeats "Every day of his/her life" and someone new is in the center.
