HMS SOPHIE
'HMS ''Sophie''', more properly His Majesty's Sloop ''Sophie'', is a fictional brig-rigged sloop-of-war that features in the first of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series of novels, Master and Commander.
The vessel carries fourteen cannon, of 4lbs. each, mounted on her upper deck, and is rigged with two masts, square-rigged on both with a large gaf-sail aft of the mainmast.
She is notable for having a quarterdeck, a rare feature on vessels so small, and an elm tree pump, also rare on a vessel of her size.
She was Spanish built, and captured by the Royal Navy, becoming Jack Aubrey's first command.
