(Redirected from Hackney South and Shoreditch)
'Hackney South and Shoreditch' is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.
The constituency shares a boundary with eight others:
Walthamstow, Leyton & Wanstead, West Ham, Bethnal Green & Bow, Cities of London and Westminster, Islington South & Finsbury, Islington North, and its borough partner Hackney North & Stoke Newington.
The constituency historically covers South Hackney, Shoreditch, Haggerston, De Beauvoir Town and Hackney Wick in the London Borough of Hackney, and is now divided into nine political wards:
★ Chatham (ward) see Homerton
★ De Beauvoir (ward) see De Beauvoir Town
★ Hackney Central (ward) see Hackney Central
★ Haggerston (ward) see Haggerston
★ Hoxton (ward) see Hoxton
★ Kings Park (ward) see Lower Clapton
★ Queensbridge (ward)
★ Victoria (ward) see South Hackney
★ Wick (ward) see Hackney Wick
★ ''Constituency created'' (1974)
The seat has a history of members switching parties. Ronald Brown, elected in 1974 as a Labour MP, joined the splinter Social Democratic Party in 1981. He held the seat as a SDP member until 1983, when he was defeated by Labour politician Brian Sedgemore. Sedgemore remained a member of the Labour Party for most of his career, but defected to the Liberal Democrats, the successors to the SDP, shortly before the 2005 election, in which he did not run. The Liberal Democrats were unable to hold the seat, which is again held by a Labour MP, Meg Hillier.
