HAIRSPRAY (MUSICAL)

'
'''Hairspray''' is a Tony-winning musical, based on the 1988 John Waters movie ''Hairspray''. The story is of a girl named Tracy Turnblad whose dream is to dance on the ''Corny Collins Show'', a local TV dance program based on the real-life ''Buddy Deane Show'' in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. She gets a chance on the show and becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to racially integrate the ''Corny Collins Show''.
''Hairspray'' was adapted for the stage and received its pre-Broadway world premiere at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre before arriving in New York City in 2002. It is currently playing on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre, and has also toured the country.
The role of Tracy Turnblad was originated by Marissa Jaret Winokur, who in late 2003 was replaced with Kathy Brier, who in turn was replaced in 2004 by Carly Jibson. The role of Tracy's mother, Edna Turnblad, was originated by Harvey Fierstein, who was replaced by Michael McKean, followed by Bruce Vilanch and John Pinette. In June 2005, Marissa Jaret Winokur returned to the role of Tracy for one month before Shannon Durig took over.
A Las Vegas production of the show ran at the Luxor Hotel from February to June 2006. During the first half of the run, original star Harvey Fierstein reprised his role as Edna Turnblad. The lead role Tracy was played by Katrina Rose Dideriksen for the entire Vegas run. Before originating Tracy in Vegas, Dideriksen understudied the role of Tracy on the Broadway Tour.
The Broadway musical was re-adapted as a musical film in 2007 starring Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad and John Travolta as Edna Turnblad.
In the 9 March, 2006, the ''Daily Mail'' announced that the show would open at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London's West End, on 11 October, 2007. Michael Ball has been announced in the role of Edna, with Mel Smith starring as Wilbur Turnblad, newcomer Leanne Jones playing Tracy and Coronation Street actress Tracie Bennett as Velma von Tussle.
